Reynolds, Upton to Sit Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin announced his starting lineup for tomorrow’s opener against the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field (12:40pm first pitch).

Mark Reynolds and Justin Upton, both regular starters, will actually start the season on the bench.  Melvin said it had more to do with numbers against Rockies starting pitcher Aaron CookChad Tracy will play in place of Reynolds and Eric Byrnes will play in place of Upton.  The hitting averag alone should tell you why.  Reynolds is hitting .231 lifetime against Cook.  Tracy is hitting .515.  That’s a no brainer.  Upton is hitting .111 and Byrnes .304.  Again, the numbers don’t lie.

It’s a bold move given the levity of it being opening day, however, these moves clearly are an indication Melvin is going to put his best lineup in the game everyday, regardless of who you are.  Good.  I hope he continues that strategy the whole season.

Dbacks will counter on the mound with Brandon Webb.  Less than 24 hours until the season is off and running.  Let’s hope we are talking opening day victory at this time tomorrow.  Go Dbacks!!
