He's a power hitter in the minors but has adjusted his swing for basehits and RBIs and high average. I know he hasn't impressed. However look at his brief September 2008 call-up and what he did in his pinch hits. Also the second call up for Reno he hit .300 and produced RBI's and doubles. To pass him up is a bad idea, especially after the Dbacks have unloaded guys like Carlos Quentin and Emilio Bonifacio who are productive starters for their clubs (though Quentin seems injury plagued) worth Whitesell getting a shot.
