Rumors, Rumors, and More Rumors

So, the trading deadline passed a couple of weeks ago.  That doesn’t mean the Arizona Diamondbacks are done trading yet.  They can still trade a player if he clears waivers or if the player is claimed and a trade can be worked out with the claiming team.

The one name that keeps popping up out there is Adam Laroche.  Apparently he is still drawing interest and rightfully so.  Question is, why are the Dbacks so hip to trading him.  He doesn’t cost much, won’t cost much next year either.  The reason – Brandon Allen.  Remember him?

Laroche and Allen both play first base.  The Dbacks can get a prospect or two in return for Laroche.  I have mixed feeling about this.  I love what Laroche is doing over the past month.  Since the All-Star break, Laroche is hitting 20 points higher and has quietly become the team leader in RBI.  Unfortunately, that translates into prime picking for a contender.  Allowing Laroche to leave give Allen a shot.  Allen didn’t perform too well when he had his chance with the Dbacks last season.  However he is tearing it up in Reno.  The Dbacks aren’t going to wait much longer before giving him a real good look up here.  That means Laroche may go.  Either way, I think the Dbacks could be set at first base for a long time.

There is always Kelly Johnson’s name that pops up, but the chatter around him has died down.  His heir apparent, Tony Abreu, hasn’t developed as quickly I think as the Dbacks would have like to have seen from him this season.  Personally, his defense is quite disappointing to me and hasn’t lived up to the hype at the plate.  Give him time, but Johnson right now isn’t being pushed at his position like Laroche is.  I think Johnson is here for the rest of the season.

We’ll see.  August 31st is the deadline for waiver trades.
