The Duke of Arizona

5-23-2010: Zach Duke in action during the Pirates vs Braves game in Pittsburgh at PNC Park.

Duke.  Zach Duke.  Meet the newest member of the Arizona Diamondbacks, thanks to the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Pirates had designated Duke for assignment and had 10 days to trade or release him.

Duke, who was 8-15 in 2010, will compete for a spot in the rotation.  He is 45-70 lifetime with a 4.50 ERA.  He was fifth in NL Rookie of the Year in 2005.  Lifetime at Chase Field, he is 2-2 with a 3.76 ERA.    Duke is one of those guys that just kind of makes you go, eh.  He is serviceable.  He makes me feel much like Rodrigo Lopez did last year, eh.

Hopefully the D'backs know what they are getting.  I'm a little curious as to why a pitcher could be deemed good enough for Arizona, but not Pittsburgh?  I guess we will find out soon enough.  This wasn't exactly the type of pickup that made me stop in my tracks and jump for joy, then again though, I don't think the D'backs have the money to make a move that will have me jumping for joy.

Duke is an interesting pitcher – I’ve followed him here in Pittsburgh since he came on the scene in ’05. I think the club (management)put too much pressure on him at an early age (turned 21 three months before been called up). Yes, he did go 8 – 2 that year – a couple of complete games and shut outs and out dueled Greg Maddox twice in his early years. He is NOT a strike out guy – sneaky on his fast ball due to his change up and curve ball. I would say that as long as your infield is strong, and you score 3 runs per game average you will love Duke – if not – it could be interesting – Duke is a competitor – he’ll give you his best every time – but a weak defense will undo him in a hurry as he produces a lot of ground balls. I personally think he was mentally done here in the burgh – you cold see that towards the last two months – If he bounces back like ’05 – Arizona may have won the lottery . . . lets see. Good luck out west D-U-K-E !
