Say Goodbye to Reynolds, Strikeouts

July 24, 2010 - Phoenix, ARIZONA, United States - epa02260126 Arizona Diamondbacks Mark Reynolds makes an off-balanced throw to put out San Francisco Giants Edgar Renteria, during the eighth inning of their Major League Baseball game in Phoenix, USA, 24 July 2010.

The Mark Reynolds era in Arizona is officially over.  Not a moment too soon either. Reynolds was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio.  Say goodbye to the record breaking strikeouts.  Also say goodbye to the power.  I will not miss the strikeouts more than I will miss Reynolds power though.

For Reynolds, he has tremendous power.  Unfortunately that power was few and far between at-bats with plenty of strikeouts in between.  Never before 2008 has a player ever struck out more than 200 times in one single season.  Reynolds has done it three times now.  Unacceptable.  Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers found it unacceptable as well and did something about it.  Make this clear, this was both a move to rid of the unproductive outs as it was to improve the bullpen as well.  The bullpen is looking for a major overhaul and today the D'backs made great strides in getting that done.

Reynolds was a voice in the locker room.  He was a leader with his words, but not his actions.  You can't have a .198 hitter and call him a leader.  You just can't.  Players follow leaders and you can't have a succession of players following that kind of productivity.  I wish it would have worked out for him.  He tried hard.  I just don't think the talent level was as high as we had all hoped it would be.

Lets just hope all these new pitchers can throw 200 plus strikouts combined.
