The Arizona Diamondbacks have had one of their busiest days of the new year so far with the official signing of four players, one of whom I wasn't sure we'd see in a Dbacks uniform again.
Today they announced signing of Willie Bloomquist, which we found out over the weekend was going to take place. Also, as expected, they avoided arbitration with Stephen Drew and Joe Saunders. What was not completely expected was the signing of Aaron Heilman. Heilman was the rock of the bullpen, if you want to call him that, for a good part of the beginning of the 2010 season. For a short while, he was the only reliever the Dbacks could count on to get an out when needed.
As the season wore on though, Heilman struggled just as much as the rest of the bullpen. When the season ended, we weren't too sure he would return in a Dbacks uniform. Hopefully Heilman can regain what he had to start last season. As dismal as the bullpen was in 2010, Heilman was a bit of ray of sunshine, even if he did drive us crazy towards the end of the season. Maybe the mix of new guys in the pen will elevate his game and the pen will be one of the bright spots of the 2011 team. I'm not asking too much am I?
