On the seventh day, God created a bullpen. He might as well have done so after the strong performance the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen put in today in their 6-5 12 inning win over the San Francisco Giants.
Dbacks relievers pitched 6.2 innings on Sunday, only giving up 1 ER, a solo home run to Pablo Sandoval off of Esmerling Vasquez. Juan Gutierrez, David Hernandez, J.J. Putz, and Josh Collmenter combined for 6 innings and giving up just 1 hit and striking out 8. It might be one of the best relief days for the Dbacks in quite some time.
Now the question will be if the bullpen can gain some positive consistency as a whole with today's performance. Hernandez and Putz have been strong prior to today, but Gutierrez and newcomer Collmenter were surprisingly strong. It was nice to see. The Giants didn't have a single baserunner after the 7th inning.
So for today, there is relief in Dbacks land. Tomorrow, there is a day off. Tuesday, well the Dbacks are off to Cincinnati and all bets are off. Relish this while you can.
