To make room for pitcher Micah Owings, who makes his return to the Arizona Diamondbacks tomorrow night against the Minnesota Twins, the Dbacks have released first baseman Russell Branyan. This comes after tonight's 8-7 thrilling win over the Twins.
Branyan, after having an outstanding spring, hitting .429 with 5 HR and 21 RBI, never caught the same fire during the regular season. He finishes with a .210 average, with only 1 HR and 2 RBI. With Juan Miranda and Xavier Nady getting the bulk of the at-bats and Branyan going through a recent hitting slump, the writing was on the wall.
I wish Branyan nothing but the best. He was caught in a situation he really couldn't win. He was too good in spring to ignore and leave off the roster, but once the regular season started, it was clear the Dbacks wanted Miranda to be given every chance to be the number 1 guy at first. When Branyan hit his slump, it was only a matter of time before the Dbacks would need his roster spot. His number has finally been called.
