Two outs into the 8th. That’s how close the Arizona Diamondbacks got today to winning the series against the Detroit Tigers. Unfortunately, the Dbacks bullpen couldn’t nail things down and wasted a great effort by Joe Saunders today. With 7 runs in the 8th inning, the Tigers erased what was a 2-1 deficit.
With closer J.J. Putz unavailable to pitch today, it was left up to Aaron Heilman to pitch the 8th so the Dbacks could use David Hernandez in the 9th. Well, Heilman got wild and manager Kirk Gibson had to use Hernandez early. Hernandez was awful today. Pitching much like he did in the implosion in Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago, Hernandez and then Brian Shaw came in and completed today’s implosion, giving the Tigers the lead for good.
The Dbacks were down 1-0 for a long while, the only run a Jhonny Peralta homer in the 1nd inning. However, the never give up Dbacks plated 2 runs, which could and should have been more in the 7th inning. The way things were going, it should have been enough though. Not today.
The Dbacks still complete the road trip 4-2, however they lose this series to the Tigers and now must come home for a quick three game stand against the Cleveland Indians before heading back out on a very long three city road trip.
