Joe Saunders, where ya been? Over his past several starts, Saunders has looked nothing like the guy that struggled last season and into the start of this season. I practically was begging for him to be removed from the rotation. His spring training ERA rivaled that of a football score. The start of season wasn’t much better, however his ERA lowered to 4.04 Saturday night as he helped the Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the Oakland A’s 4-2.
Saunders ran into a bit of trouble to start the 8th, walking and giving up a single to the first two hitters, the single being a seeing eye single up the middle. Reliever Yhency Brazoban balked runners to second and third and gave up a couple of hits to allow the inherited runners to score. So tonight Saunders ended up allowing 2 ER in 7 innings. I’ll take that from him every time out.
The offense tonight was Chris Young. He was a triple shy of the cycle, hitting his league leading 23rd double of the season and his 16th homer. David Hernandez came in and shut things down in the 9th to preserve the victory Saunders definitely deserved.
