So, will the third time be the charm for Brandon Allen? Well, it had better be, otherwise the first baseman carousel will continue for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Juan Miranda, who started slow, got hot at the end of May and cooled off considerably in June and early July, was optioned outright to AAA Reno. For Allen, this will be his third shot with the Dbacks.
In the first two stints with the Dbacks, Allen had good moments here and there, but never produced consistent results, which led him right back to AAA this season. Allen, who is hitting .306 with 18 homers in Reno, will be given the chance to play a lot of first base and hopefully become the everyday guy.
Allen will still give way to Xavier Nady at first from time to time, but it is Allen’s job to lose. If he produces, it will be his full time. However, I reserve the right to remain skeptical until I see the results.
As for Miranda, it is disappointing he didn’t produce the way many of thought he would when he was acquired from the New York Yankees in the off-season. I won’t shut the door completely on Miranda but my bet is on him never wearing a Dbacks uniform again, especially if Allen grabs the reins and runs with it.
