The Arizona Diamondbacks were down to their last at-bat. Who do you call on? Well, recently recalled Brandon Allen. Of course! Brilliant! Say What? Not exactly the way to make Dbacks fans feel good about the ending.
Then again, what choice did the Dbacks have? They called Allen up for this very reason….to produce in crucial situations. That’s fine, I’m all for that, but in his first game? I think you put too much pressure on a guy to perform. A couple of weeks in? Good…send him in being the winning run at the plate. Not in at-bat number one of his MLB season.
Whatever. Allen struck out as predicted. He was patient but maybe a little too much so. Even though that last strike wasn’t close to being a strike, you can’t be taking that kind of pitch with 2 strikes in the bottom of the ninth. The umpire will ring you up 10 out of 10 times, guaranteed – especially if you are just recently arrived from AAA. Allen will get many more shots. Hopefully his next shot will be during a start and not a pinch-hitting appearance.
