Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star outfielder Justin Upton had a tough weekend. He went 0-11 in the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. I wouldn’t say he was pressing because he wasn’t far off from big hits from time to time, but clearly it might be a good time to give him a day off.
With Upton taking part in the All-Star Game, it is possible he could be in need of just a game or two off. That strategy has seemed to work with others this season. After Sunday’s game, Upton is now hitting .284, which means his batting average has dropped over 20 points since its high a couple of weeks ago.
I wouldn’t be too worried yet, however, I imagine manager Kirk Gibson has taken notice and will do the right thing. Clearly the Dbacks wouldn’t be where they are without Upton. They will need him down the stretch if they want to entertain any thoughts of competing for a playoff spot in September.
