Will they be buyers or will they just stand? That’s the big question facing the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend as they watch competitors make moves for players to gain the upper hand pennant races. The MLB trade deadline is tomorrow.
The San Francisco Giants didn’t need to make any moves on their pitching staff, so they went out and helped themselves where they were deficient, in offense. They picked up Carlos Beltran from the New York Mets a couple of days ago.
The Dbacks big move? They sold Yhency Brazoban to Japan and called up some guys from Reno who couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat.
Now, I do agree, the Dbacks should not give up first tier players, but they really need to make a decision as to whether they want to do anything. Right now, the Dbacks aren’t gaining any ground on the Giants. This may be as good as it gets in 2011. Fine, then come out and say so. Clearly we will have a better idea come Monday morning what the Dbacks intentions are, but if they fail to get any deals done, they’ve said “we’re done in 2011″.
