For awhile Saturday night, it looked as if the Arizona Diamondbacks were going to let an opportunity to gain ground on the San Francisco Giants slip through their hands again. However, thanks to a Justin Upton bases clearing double and some patience at the plate, the Dbacks game back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4.
The Dbacks needed to win to gain a game on the Giants, who lost to the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 on Saturday night. Starter Micah Owings wasn’t particularly sharp in what might have been his last start of the season given the Saturday afternoon acquisition of Jason Marquis. Owings struggled but made it through five innings.
J.J. Putz came on for his 23rd save of the season to finish things out after solid relief appearances by David Hernandez, Brian Shaw, and Joe Paterson. Now we will wait and see what waits for the Arizona bullpen tomorrow. Word is the top brass of the Dbacks are holed up in a hotel room trying to make a deal.
