The Arizona Diamondbacks got a reliever as promised on Sunday morning. It was a reliever from the Oakland A’s, but not the one we all thought it would or should be. The Dbacks received reliever Brad Ziegler from the A’s for first baseman Brandon Allen and reliever Jordan Norberto. I can only guess the price was too high for Grant Balfour. Ziegler is more of a situational pitcher.
With Ziegler, the Dbacks are getting a reliever that is 3-2, 2.39 ERA. What is alarming though is lefties hit .398 off of him this season. His sidearm pitch is more to get tough righties out. He has not given up a single HR this season though in 37.2 innings of work.
As far as what the Dbacks are giving up. Brandon Allen struggled in his third go around with the big club. After last night’s game, Allen was hitting .172 with 3 HR. Unfortunately for Allen, the Dbacks just don’t have the patience or time to stick with a struggling first baseman. He will be the third first baseman jettisoned this season after Russell Branyan and Juan Miranda. Now, it’s Paul Goldschmidt‘s turn.
Jordan Norberto has a couple of shots with the Dbacks but really never did anything of any consequence. It almost seems to me he was just thrown in so the A’s had someone to replace Ziegler in their pen. All in all – I will hold out judgement on this move, however, it was clearly time for Allen to move on after three chances. I can’t wait to see what Goldschmidt does.
