The Arizona Diamondbacks are rumored to still be working on trying to obtain a relief pitcher to bolster their bullpen for the home stretch. One of the names that keeps popping up is the Oakland A’s Grant Balfour. Balfour is currently 4-1, 1.93 ERA. He is a man of 42′s. He has 42 innings pitched, 42 game appearances, and 42 strikeouts.
The Australian-born pitcher has only allowed hitters to hit .184 against him this season. He is exactly the breath of fresh air, at least stat wise, that the Dbacks need in their pen. When you have numbers like that, especially in a hitter friendly American League, that says something.
I haven’t heard of any other names pop-up since last night when the focus turned to to bullpen and middle infield help after the Dbacks acquired starting pitcher Jason Marquis. You can bet the Dbacks didn’t stay up last night just trying to consummate a Balfour deal. They will be looking in multiple places in case Balfour falls through. Right now though, the focus seems to be on getting that deal completed. I’ll check in later on this one.
