Paul Goldschmidt. Learn the name. Embrace the name. This first base stud, at least in AA Mobile, is about to make his Major League Baseball debut this evening for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. I, for one, can’t wait. He faces a tough pitcher in the Giants Matt Cain, but I still look forward to seeing the kid take a big league swing.
Goldschmidt will be the fifth guy to play first base for the Dbacks this season as he will bat seventh in tonight’s lineup. He has power, he hits for average. He is the type of first baseman the Dbacks have been lacking all season. Hopefully some of his numbers Will Carry over to this level. He hit .306 with 30 HR and 94 RBI in AA Mobile.
Like I said though, tonight and the whole series will be tough. Let’s not get down on the kid if he fails to produce anything. Going through Cain, Tim Lincecum, and Ryan Vogelsong is no easy task. From the sounds of it though, he was tearing the ball up in batting practice this afternoon. Dbacks GM Kevin Towers was on Sports620KTAR this afternoon and said Goldschmidt has very good power and that he hit a few balls out of At&T Park in his batting practice session. Now, what can he do once he gets to the plate for real? Nerves might get the best of him tonight, but anything is possible.
