Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton has been scuffling maybe just a little at the plate lately, but he is still contributing. He hit a home run and had three RBI last night to continue to prove he still belongs in the MVP discussion. There are several players, even a couple on the Colorado Rockies like Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki who have better power numbers. It’s all about the intangibles and when those number come into play.
Tulowitzki has great power numbers. he has 28 HR and 94 RBI, both more than Upton. However he is hitting 6-52 against the Dbacks this season. He’s not exactly lighting it up against the best teams. Upton’s hits seem to come at opportune times, although last night’s HR was just icing on top of the cake.
Upton still has the month of September to do some damage though. He has a great shot at hitting 30 HR and 100RBI. He’s going to have to have a pretty monster month to get 20 RBI, but then again, that’s what MVP’s do. So if he does get 20 RBI or more in September, then he should definitely be on some ballots as the MVP.
