The Arizona Diamondbacks won’t be able to mathematically eliminate the San Francisco Giants on Sunday with a win, that won’t come for awhile, however, they sure can leave San Francisco with many thinking this is it for the Giants and look at the Dbacks as the National League West Champions. Of course the Giants, even if they do lose today, won’t go quietly. They are too experienced and they, like the Dbacks, aren’t quitters. Although their offense isn’t very good, the Giants pitching is still good enough to keep them in the conversation until it is officially over. So, that being said, Dbacks still can put more distance today between them and the Giants with a win. A win will put them up by seven games with 22 to play.
It will take another great effort to beat the Giants today though. Although the Dbacks send Daniel Hudson to the mound with a record of 14-9, the Dbacks offense will be facing Ryan Vogelsong, who has pretty much owned the Dbacks this season. Last time out, Vogelsong pitched the Giants to a 8-1 win to avoid a three-game sweep in August.
This is again another chance though for the Dbacks to put their foot on the pedal. The Giants and Dbacks only have three games left with each other and that is the weekend of September 23-25, which is the second to last series of the season. Have a four game or more lead on the Giants then, the Giants can’t get back to first even by sweeping then.
It’s today we need to worry about first though if you even want to entertain large leads in the division. They just need to do what they’ve been doing all season, taking one day at a time. Let’s hope they can create a season high seven game lead this afternoon.
