The next time the Arizona Diamondbacks take the field, they could be your 2011 National League Western Division Champions. Of course, more realistically, they will have to wait until this weekend against the very team that is chasing them, the San Francisco Giants, to clinch the title. The Dbacks, after losing a lackluster game Tuesday night, came back to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon 8-5 to take two of three games in the series.
The Dbacks offense was a two-inning juggernaut today. They scored three in the first, in part thanks to a Miguel Montero home run. In the third inning, they added another five runs and it looked as if the rout was on.
As usual though, the Dbacks would not allow the opposition to go quietly. Wade Miley labored through five innings and then gave way to the bullpen. Micah Owings came in and the first pitch he threw in the sixth inning was a blast out of the park off of the Pirates Derrek Lee.
So now it is up to the Giants to make things interesting. They have a game tonight and tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lose both, the race is officially over. If they win at least one, the Dbacks will get a shot to win the division on Friday night.
