Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Josh Collmenter is going to get his first postseason start on Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s game three and an elimination game. Yeah, I did a double take too. The move by manager Kirk Gibson to go with Collmenter over Joe Saunders either is the most brilliant move by the skipper or the dumbest move he’s made all season. Of course, I give Gibby the benefit of the doubt on this one for now given the reasons why he is doing it. However, as we’ve seen in the first two games, every move made based on what happened in the regular season has backfired for the Dbacks to this point.
It is definitely a gamble to go with Collmenter, however Collmenter pitched well, twice, against the Brewers during the season. This is the playoffs though. It’s a different beast and the way the Brewers are hitting the ball right now, you have to believe the Brewers will have a different plan of attack this go around.
Of course I hope it works out. If it does, that means Joe Saunders goes in game four to try to send the series back to Milwaukee. First thing is first though, the Dbacks need to win tomorrow night. If they don’t, season is over. The fans need to get behind Collmenter and get loud.
For Collmenter, he really needs to pitch the Brewers the way he did in the regular season. If it doesn’t work out, then he needs to figure out how to adjust. It’s that possible adjustment that has me worried because if he adjusts too late, nothing much the rest of us can do but second guess the decision in a series full of second guessing.
