The Arizona Diamondbacks weren’t able to overcome an offensive outburst by Chase Headley as he led the San Diego Padres to a 6-5 victory over the D-backs on Friday night.
San Diego got of to a quick start in the bottom of the first when Yasmani Grandal doubled to deep left field to score Chris Denorfia and Logan Forsythe to put the Pads on top 2-0.
They would add three runs in the bottom of the next inning off of Chase Headley’s three-run bomb to left field to extend San Diego’s lead to 5-0.
Arizona wouldn’t give up easy though, battling back in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run RBI double by Ryan Wheeler to score Miguel Montero and Chris Johnson to cut the deficit to 5-2. Wheeler would add another double in the top of the seventh inning to score Montero again and add Arizona’s third run.
The score would be all tied up in the top of the eighth inning of Miguel Montero’s two-run RBI double to deep right-center field to score Adam Eaton and Jason Kubel.
Unfortunately for Arizona, it wouldn’t be enough to contain San Diego’s third baseman Chase Headley as he added a second homer (solo) in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Padres a 6-5 lead late in the game which would propel the home team to victory.
Arizona rookie starter Tyler Skaggs had one of his worst starts as a big leaguer, lasting only three innings, allowing five runs off of five hits.
Arizona send Wade Miley to the mound for game two of the series today in San Diego.
