The cure for the bullpen just departed the city of Tampa. Kyle Farnsworth was released by the Rays after almost three years with the club and now is free to sign with the team of his choosing. Since GM Kevin Towers loves tinkering with bullpens, perhaps the Arizona Diamondbacks should place a call to the veteren righty. I know the D-Backs ‘pen is a little on the crowded side right now, but what’s wrong with making room for one more before the rosters expand on September 1st?
I know it has been a rough year for Farnsworth, hence the reason for his release. His 5.76 ERA in 39 games this season doesn’t make you want to run out and send a car for him. However, he did have two effective years in Tampa including 25 saves and a 2.18 ERA in 2011. A change of scenery, as well as leagues, could be just what cures Farnsy’s struggles. Just look at Heath Bell. I know, he has struggled at times for Arizona in 2013 but compared to his 2012 South Florida stint, he looks like the second coming of Bruce Sutter. Surely, for two weeks Chaz Roe can go back down to Triple A Reno while Farnsworth takes his place.
Signing Kyle Farnsworth is a very low-risk, medium-reward move for the D-Backs. He is another power arm who can close games if necessary. Book him his plane ticket now.
