Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks became the talk of the Winter Meetings with their three way deal that involved the Los Angeles Angels and the Chicago White Sox. A week after also unloading Heath Bell and David Holmberg, you would think that Kevin Towers would spend the rest of the week at Disney World or Universal Studios. Then came this quote as provided by Nick Piecoro at azcentral.com via Twitter:
“We plan on leaving with a pitcher before we’re done.”
The rumor late yesterday according to Buster Olney at ESPN was that the D’backs had offered Joba Chamberlin a one year, $3 million dollar deal. According to Steve Gilbert at mlb.com, a high-ranking D’back official stated no offer was made. Even if the Snakes contacted Joba, I am not quite sure that was the type of pitcher GM Towers was referring to. Matt Garza has not been connected up until now to Arizona just like Carlos Beltran was not connected to them right before a late, great offer was made to him. It also sounds as though that yesterday’s deal does not preclude the team from pursuing a pitcher via trade. It is also surprising that no talk of a bullpen arm has surfaced. I have already posed the question of should the D’backs sign Grant Balfour.
