It’s Friday which means the end of our work week is getting near. However, the work or fun, depending on your perspective, is never done in the world of Major League Baseball. For the Arizona Diamondbacks, Spring Training came a bit sooner than the rest of baseball as they prepare to begin regular season play earlier than everyone else when they travel to Australia to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. To get us rolling, Derrick Hall was part of a Twitter chat yesterday, taking questions from fans for about 45 minutes. By the tone of Hall’s tweets you can tell that he is excited for the upcoming season. You can view the recap at mlb.com by clicking here.
If you are a D’backs’ fan that wants to a crash course about the organization’s farm system, head over to insidethezona and read Jeff Wiser’s outstanding interview with Jason Parks from Baseball Prospectus. If you are not familiar with Parks, he is one of the best in the business in evaluating Minor League players. The name the Professor kept harping on that Snakes’ fans should look out for is Jose Martinez, a young fireballer who was profiled by our own Joe Jacquez back in January.
Bronson Arroyo is still available in the free agent market with the D’backs as one of the favorites to land him. Remember, Kevin Towers was determined to leave the Winter with a starting pitcher. Jim McLennan at azsnakepit offers his opinion as to why the team may be better off sitting this one out.
Earlier this week, Freddie Freeman signed an monster deal with the Atlanta Braves. Freeman, two years younger than Paul Goldschmidt will earn $135 million dollars over the next eight years. Vince Marotta at arizonasports.com compares the two players and writes that GM Kevin Towers’s decision to lock up Goldy early looks downright brilliant now.
Finally, we waited long enough for Spring Training. It’s time for the first photo of the 2014 season courtesy of Steve Gilbert at mlb.com. March 22nd is only six weeks away.
