After months and months of waiting, we got our first taste of real, live baseball today. The Arizona Diamondbacks kicked off their 2014 Spring schedule in fine fashion by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 at Salt River Fields. Brandon McCarthy was the story, pitching four strong innings allowing a run on four hits, walking one and striking out one. Five D’back relievers held LA to only three hits over the next five innings. Particularly impressive was Joe Thatcher who have up a hit but struck out three.
The other hurlers who saw action today were J.J. Putz (one inning, no hits, one walk, one K), Addison Reed (one inning, two hits, two K’s), Brad Ziegler (one inning of no hits, walks and K’s) and Josh Collmenter (one inning, three pitches). Martin Prado recorded the first RBI of the year by driving in Aaron Hill. A.J. Pollock contributed with an RBI triple and Hill and Didi Gregorius had the other RBI’s. The D’backs cuffed around Clayton Kershaw for five hits and three runs in two innings of work. Mark Trumbo debuted with a walk and a strikeout while Chris Owings saw time at second base.
