The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a two year deal with lefty reliever Oliver Perez, pending a physical. It was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and terms were confirmed by John Gambadoro at Arizona Sports 98.7. Perez will earn $1.75 million dollars in 2014 and $2.5 million in 2015.
Perez found a home the last two seasons with the Seattle Mariners, re-inventing himself as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen. He appeared in 94 games in Seattle going 4-6 with a 3.16 ERA and two saves. However, his ERA was over a run and a half higher in 2013 as his workload increased from 29 2/3 innings in 2012 to 53 last year. Control, always an issue with Ollie P, walked 26 batters last season.
This was obviously done because management is dissatisfied with the current crop of lefties in the D’backs’ bullpen. It is entirely possible that Joe Thatcher will still make the Opening Day roster but almost certainly means another trip to Triple A Reno for Joe Paterson and Eury De La Rosa. All Perez has to do is pass a physical and he is a new member of the D’backs.
