Sunday was no day of rest for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization. Their roster was trimmed from 53 players down to 40 with guys that performed well yesterday among those that were cut. Four players were sent to Triple A Reno while the other nine were assigned to the club’s Minor League camp.
Outfielders Alfredo Marte and Ender Inciarte and pitchers Eury De La Rosa and Zeke Spruill were ticketed to Reno. All four had a role in yesterday’s 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Marte went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple while Incaiarte contributed an RBI single. De La Rosa struck out the only two batters he faced and Spruill pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief. Marte in particular must be bitterly disappointed. He was hitting a sizzling .455 this Spring with a realistic chance to be the team’s fifth outfielder. Incaiarte was also performing well hitting .353. Spruill hurled a total of two scoreless while De La Rosa allowed a run in three innings of work.
The nine players re-assigned are as follows:
With Joe Thatcher possibly on the chopping block and Stites re-assigned, the D’backs could open the season with no player on the roster from the Ian Kennedy trade. My hunch is we will see Barrett, the team’s #5 prospect, sometime around the All Star Break. The roster to be set at 28 by the time the team travels to Australia next Sunday.
