The inevitable will be occurring within the next several hours. The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to place Cody Ross on the 15-day disabled list according to both Steve Gilbert at mlb.com and Nick Piecoro at azcentral.com. While Ross has made tremendous progress rehabbing his surgically repaired hip, the resulting quirk in the schedule due to the trip to Australia allows Ross to miss only the first three days of the regular season.
Since the organization was anticipating this to happen, it allowed them to take both Didi Gregorius and Chris Owings Down Under. Manager Kirk Gibson has stated that both shortstops will each get a start. Also, both Matt Tuiasosopo and Tony Campana, battling for spot in the outfield made the trip. As for Ross, he made one appearance in a Spring Training game, a pinch-hitting at-bat in which he struck out.
It was a no-brainer leaving Cody Ross behind in Arizona. Having him take a long flight on a repaired hip would have been foolish. It also affords the team extra time to determine winners at multiple position battles.
