Arizona Diamondbacks Drop Opener 3-1

The first game Down Under turned out to be a real Downer for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the D’backs 3-1 behind a strong 6 2/3 innings effort by Clayton Kershaw. Wade Miley took the loss going five innings and allowing three runs on three hits, walking two and striking out eight. Scott Van Slyke struck the big blow, a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning.

Notable D’back highlights:

-Mark Trumbo drove in the only run of the game for the Snakes with an RBI groundout in the sixth. Paul Goldschmidt had led off the frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

-Trumbo added his first assist in the top of the seventh when he threw out Kershaw trying to stretch a single into a double.

-Will Harris, fighting for a spot in the bullpen, threw two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and fanning three. Brad Ziegler, Oliver Perez and J.J. Putz pitched the final two innings.

-Goldy went 2 for 4 while Aaron Hill, Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra had the other D’back hits.

The teams play each other again tonight at 10 PM EST, 7 PM MST. Trevor Cahill takes the ball for Arizona and will oppose LA’s Hyun-Jin Ru.
