Five days off did not affect the Arizona Diamondbacks one bit. Today at Salt River Fields, the D’backs beat the Chicago Cubs 14-4 with the offense banging out 20 hits which included six home runs. Brandon McCarthy, in his final start before he takes the mound for real on Monday, gave up three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six. If today was the day the Snakes decided on a shortstop, then Chris Owings would be the starter. Didi Gregorius began the game and went 0 for 2 while Owings went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI’s.
Other D’back notes from the game:
-Martin Prado went 2 for 3 to raise his Spring Training average to a robust .488.
-Marcos Mateo, whom the D’backs selected in the Rule 5 draft from the Cubs and then given back, pitched a third of an inning for Chicago giving up a run on two hits.
The D’backs have a split squad affair with games against the Cincinnati Reds at 12:05 PM with the final game at Salt River at 1:10 PM vs. the Cleveland Indians.
