The Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs enter the second game of their four game series with combined records of 11-29. Needless to say, it is desperation times for both clubs. The D’backs trot out Brandon McCarthy who is 0-3 with a 7.11 ERA. Frankly, I am tired of reading how he pitched well enough to win in his last outing. Allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings to the offensively-challenged New York Mets should not be anyone’s idea of a good start. No ifs, ands or buts about it, McCarthy needs to go seven strong innings. The bullpen has pitched better as of late but could use a light workload in the confines of Wrigley Field this evening.
Taking the ball for Chicago will be Jason Hammel who has pitched well in three starts. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .143 average thus far. In 20 2/3 innings, Hammel has walked only five while striking out 16. However, he is no Travis Wood with the bat so at least the Snakes should not bet beat at the bat two straight nights by the opposing pitcher.
A.J. Pollock is once again out of the lineup due to a sore neck. It also seems that manager Kirk Gibson is back to his ways of using the batting order as his own game of musical chairs. Mark Trumbo, who provided the only run of the evening yesterday, finds himself on the bench. Eric Chavez is in the cleanup spot….you’ll see in a minute.
Game time is set for 5:05 PM MST. The lineup is as follows:
