When the Arizona Diamondbacks are seemingly on the edge of the abyss, there is one guy they have called on to rescue them. That would be tonight’s starting pitcher, Josh Collmenter. Tomahawk was the last pitcher to get a win for the D’backs as he tossed six scoreless innings on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies. He will be making his fourth start since joining the starting rotation and has pitched 14 innings in that role, allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits, walking three and striking out 11. Collmenter’s task is to shut down the sizzling Colorado Rockies in general and Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado in particular. Tulo has gone 5 for 6 with two home runs in this series and Arenado is on a 19 game hitting streak.
Taking the ball for the Rockies will be Jordan Lyles, who was acquired from the Houston Astros in the deal that sent Dexter Fowler down south. Lyles has pitched well in the rotation in place of the injured Brett Anderson and Jhoulys Chacin. He is 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA in five starts. Martin Prado makes his return to the lineup, one night after being benched following his best game of the season. Cody Ross has been brutal in his return from the disabled list going 3 for 35 including a strikeout in a pinch-hitting appearance last night. On the bright side, Chris Owings leads all National League rookies in hits with 25.
Tonight’s contest marks the end of a six game homestand. The D’backs then head out on the road for nine games in San Diego, Milwaukee and Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM MST. Here is the D’backs’ lineup:
