The Mets haven’t had a whole lot go their way this season especially at shortstop. Going into the season they wanted to sign Stephen Drew but that didn’t work out and so they turned to the Diamondbacks. Coming into the season, the Snakes had alot of shortstop depth and at the time, Chris Owings and Didi were competing for the job, so the Mets figured why not, and that is what led to rumors about Gregorius.
Apparently, New York is still interested despite the fact that no trade was made last winter. Andy Martino of the New York Daily News talked about this in a recent column: “The Mets also continue to monitor Arizona’s Didi Gregorius, although that franchise’s recent front office shakeup creates uncertainty. Sandy Alderson has long and complex relationships with both Kevin Towers, the D’Backs GM who worked under him in San Diego, and Tony LaRussa, the newly appointed “chief baseball officer” who managed in Oakland when Alderson was GM. At the moment, it is unclear to other teams which of the two would make a trade, anyway.”
The Dbacks ended up going with Chris Owings as the starting shortstop and he has exceeded expectations so far this season. He is one of the top offensive rookies this season batting over .290 and he is starting to drive in more runs. Plus Owings defense is fabulous. Despite all of this, Owings hasn’t run away with the job, and I dont know if Cliff Pennington is a better option over Gregorius if Owings were to get hurt for an extended peroid.
Now the Dbacks always need young pitching, but if its not a guy like Noah Syndergard I wouldn’t make the trade. I simply think its to big of a risk to trade away Gregorius. The Dbacks will really regret it if Owings gets hurt, simply put I dont think Pennington can produce for a full season like Owings and Gregorius can. Didi has also played really well with Reno this season batting .295 with 20 RBI’s.
