Down on the farm, some good things are happening for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Double A Mobile BayBears are once again in first place. There are All-Stars at several levels. One standout at the moment is Braden Shipley, who is currently pitching at High Class A Visalia Rawhide.
Shipley, who began 2014 with the Lower A South Bend Silver Hawks, is widely considered the D’backs’ organization’s second-best prospect behind Archie Bradley. He was the 15th pick in the 2013 Draft out of the University of Nevada-Reno. The 22-year old right-hander was promoted to Visalia in late May and has really sparkled since the Fourth of July. In four starts since then, Shipley has pitched at least six innings in all of them. He has allowed two earned runs or less in each of them while walking seven and striking out 28. His last two appearances have been seven innings apiece with only one earned allowed in each outing. In 18 total starts in 2014, Shipley is 6-6 with a 3.91 ERA with 109 strikeouts and only 32 walks in 106 innings.
Shipley’s numbers dictate that he will begin next year with Mobile. He seems to be on a fast track to possibly receive a promotion to Arizona in September 2015. Diamondback fans probably can’t wait that long.
