The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to shuffle the roster. On Friday, the team promoted left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin and outfielder Xavier Paul. To make room for the latest additions, the D’backs sent down shortstop Nick Ahmed and outfielder Roger Kieschnick to Triple A Reno.
The 24-year old Chafin was the 43rd overall pick in the 2011 Draft, going to school at Kent St. Coming into 2014, he was listed at the organization’s #6 prospect by mlb.com. Between Double A Mobile and Triple A Reno this season, Chafin was 8-6 with a 3.96 ERA in 23 starts. In 131 2/3 innings, he has allowed 142 hits and 51 walks while striking out 102. In four Minor League seasons, he is 27-20 with a 3.95 ERA.
Paul has played in parts of five seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds. He was signed by the D’backs as a Minor League free agent on Thursday after he spent most of 2014 with Triple A Norfolk (Baltimore Orioles). Paul had 12 home runs and 56 RBI’s with a line of .254/.316/.431 for the Tides.
With Cliff Pennington activated from the disabled list, Ahmed became a victim of the numbers game. As for Kieschnick, this is the second time he has been sent down after a short recall.
