Earlier this season, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Minor League first baseman Jon Griffin made news when he hit four home runs in one game for the Double A Mobile BayBears. Another D’back farmhand recently had a power surge, this time in a playoff contest.
First baseman Steve McQuail blasted three home runs yesterday for the High Class A Visalia Rawhide, leading his team to a 13-3 victory over the Stockton Ports. It was Game 1 of the best-of-three California League North Division playoffs. McQuail had a total of five RBI’s with solo shots in the second and eighth innings and a two-run dinger in the sixth with an RBI single in the fourth for good measure. Rudy Flores contributed four RBI’s to the Rawhide’s big victory.
McQuail was originally taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 30th round of the 2010 Draft. He spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Schaumburg Boomers of the Independent Frontier League. The D’backs signed him before the 2014 season and he played with the lower Class A South Bend Silver Hawks as well as two games with the Triple A Reno Aces. His regular season numbers were 17 home runs and 56 RBI’s while batting ..253 with a .308 on-base percentage.
Visalia goes for the sweep tonight at 7:15 PM MST.
