More from Venom Strikes

The Washington Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks will meet at Chase Field on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of a three game series. Both games were blowouts as Washington won 11-1 on Monday and Arizona won 14-6 on Tuesday. The Dbacks could really use the momentum boost before they head out east for the first time this year.

Last night saw the Dbacks continue their trend of spontaneous explosions. Hitting in the #2 spot has done wonders for Mark Trumbo and last night he smacked 2 more homers. Ender Inciarte contributed a long ball of his own. Aaron Hill and Chris Owings both went 3-for-5. All the aforementioned names will return to the lineup on Wednesday. The only changes will be A.J. Pollock and Jordan Pacheco entering the lineup.

Probable Pitchers

Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 3.62 ERA, 39 K) vs Jeremy Hellickson (1-3, 5.85 ERA, 25 K)

Gonzalez is a former 1st round draft pick back in 2004. After spending 4 seasons with Oakland, and reaching an All Star game in 2011, Gio was traded to Washington. He really broke out with the Nats as the following season he collected 21 wins and a 2.89 ERA. His numbers have never been that high since.

Gonzalez is coming off back-to-back stellar starts. His last outing was a 7 inning win in which he only gave up a couple of runs and struck out 8 hitters. The previous appearance was another victorious 7 inning outing. That time it was a scoreless start in which he struck out 9 hitters. Gio is rolling right now.

Hellickson is currently experiencing a very rough patch. His last outing saw him surrender 5 runs and 8 hits in less than 5 innings. Hellickson hasn’t been able to go 6 innings in over 3 weeks, which is also when his last victory came.

De La Rosa, Collmenter and Anderson have all pitched 7 innings or more on various occasions, but Hellickson has yet to do so. Hellickson’s seat on the pitching rotation could get hotter once Bradley comes back and depending on how well Corbin’s rehab process goes.

Starting Lineups

First pitch is 12:40 MST in Phoenix.
