The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today that they have acquired speedy outfielder Tony Campana from the Chicago Cubs for minor league pitchers Jesus Castillo and Erick Leal.

June 15, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Cubs center fielder Tony Campana (bottom) steals second base as the ball bounces away from Boston Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles (3) during the first inning at Wrigley Field.
Campana played all three outfield positions for the Cubs in the past two seasons. Last season, the 26-year-old stolen base threat played in 89 games with the Cubs, hitting .264 with zero home runs and five RBI’s. He stole 30 bases in 33 attempts, ranking him 9th in the National League.

In 2011, the left-handed speedster hit .259 with one home run and six RBI’s in 95 games. He stole 24 bases in 26 attempts. Over a two-year stretch, Campana has a stolen base percentage that ranks second in the National League as he has been successful in 54 of 59 attempts (91.6%).

The 5’8, 165 lbs. Campana adds depth to an already crowded D’backs outfield and will get a chance to fight for a roster spot during Spring Training, according to Arizona GM Kevin Towers. It is probable that he begins the season at Class AAA Reno.

Arizona shipped out a pair of promising 17-year-old pitchers to acquire Campana.

Castillo and Leal pitched for the DSL D’backs in the Dominican Summer League in 2012.

Leal posted a 6-2 record with a 2.44 ERA, primarily as a starter. He posted an amazing 6.36-1 strikeout to walk ratio in the Dominican this summer.

Castillo, posted a 2-4 record with a 5.40 ERA in 14 appearances, both starting and out of the bullpen.

When the Diamondbacks acquired shortstop Didi Gregorius from the Cincinnati Reds in the Trevor Bauer trade, many believed that he would be the shortstop of the future for the franchise. Any hopes that the future might be now were put on hold today when it was revealed that the 22-year-old has been shut down for the past month with persistent elbow issues.

Gregorius was examined by the D’backs team physician, Dr. Michael Lee, who suggested that he limit all activity for four weeks after feeling pain during a January throwing session. According to the Bickley and MJ show on Xtra Sports 910 in Phoenix, the problem is with the ulnar collateral ligament in Gregorius’ throwing elbow and while surgery will not be ordered on the elbow now, that it may be an option if it doesn’t heal in the future.

GM Kevin Towers feels that this will only be a temporary delay for the Dutch product and expects him to begin playing games towards the end of Spring Training if all goes well with a throwing program that will be implemented during the beginning of Spring Training.

Veterans Willie Bloomquist and Cliff Pennington will attempt to take advantage of Gregorius’ absence as they will split most of the time at shortstop during the time that the slick fielding shortstop will be sidelined.
