The San Diego Padres (33-50) overcame an early deficit to complete a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks (39-42) with an 8-6 win on the 4th of July in front of a sold out crowd.

The Padres got on the board first with an RBI triple by Chase Headley, scoring Chris Denorfia and putting the team up 1-0 in the top of the first.

Arizona responded in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run by Jason Kubel, putting the Diamondbacks up 3-1.

San Diego would chip away at the lead in the top of the third inning when Yonder Alonso singled to right field, plating a run and cutting the lead 3-2. The would tie the score in the top of the fourth inning when Jason Marquis doubled to right field, scoring Everth Cabrera.

The Padres would take the lead in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single to center field by Alexi Amarista, scoring a run and taking the lead 4-3.

The D-backs fought back, tying the score at 4 with an RBI single by Willie Bloomquist, scoring Gerardo Parra.

Unfortunately for the home team, the Pads who have been very feisty throughout the series, would fight back and take the lead yet again in the top of the eight with a two run home run by Yasmani Grandal. They would add a couple runs in the top of the ninth inning and would go on to win 8-6.

The story of the series was the inability of either team to hold leads, giving up a combined 36 runs over a three game series. With the loss the Diamondbacks have lost their fifth straight game. They open up a very important three game series against the division leading Los Angeles Dodgers tomorrow evening in Phoenix.

The San Diego Padres (32-50) continued their offensive outburst in Phoenix, pounding rookie Trevor Bauer and the Arizona Diamondbacks (39-41) pitching staff for ten hits and nine runs in a 9-5 victory Tuesday night.

The offense started in the second inning when Yonder Alonso hit a two run home run to right field, scoring Yasmani Grandal and putting the Pads up 2-0.

They would explode in the top of the fourth when Ross Ohlendorf started things off by hitting a sacrifice bunt to first base, scoring Cameron Maybin. Alexi Amarista would single to left to score Everth Cabrera to add another run, and put the pads up 4-0. They would go up 7-0 with a three-run RBI double by Chase Headley.

Jason Kubel would hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-4.

Jesus Guzman would add another run in the top of the eighth with a solo home run, putting the Pads up 9-4. Paul Goldschmidt would cut the lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the offensive explosion by the visiting Padres.

Bauer made his home debut on Tuesday night and unfortunately was less than spectacular, allowing six hits and six earned runs over 3.1 innings pitched.

Ian Kennedy will take the mound tomorrow for the the D-backs in an attempt to avoid the sweep in the three-game series.

The Arizona Diamondbacks (39-40) couldn’t produce with runners in scoring position Monday night, losing to the visiting San Diego Padres (31-50) in the first game of a three game series, 6-2.

The Padres got on the board first in the top of the first inning off of a solo home run by Alexi Amarista, putting the Pads up 1-0. They would add another run in the top of the sixth inning when Cameron Maybin hit a solo home run to left center field. Amarista would double to deep right center field later in the inning to score Everth Cabrera and Will Venable, extending their lead to 4-0.

Paul Goldschmidt would finally put the D-backs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Willie Bloomquist, and cutting the lead to 4-1.

San Diego would add on to their lead in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run by Yasmani Grandal, putting the visitors up 5-1. Chris Young would hit a solo home run to cut the lead in the bottom of the seventh, but that wouldn’t be enough to stay with the Padres, as they would add another run in the top of the eight on a bases loaded walk.

The story of the night was Arizona’s inability to score with runners in scoring position. The snakes went 0-8 with runners in scoring position on the night, while stranding seven runners on base.
