Just as it is with opening day, the day pitchers and catchers report is a special day for all baseball fans. This is the official start to erasing all the bad memories from season’s past and the race towards something new, starts.

The Arizona Diamondbacks pitchers and catchers report for their first workout today in Tucson. This is will be their last spring in Tucson before moving to new digs in Scottsdale next spring.

The pitching rotation seems to be set, at least for the first week. Yesterday, manager A.J. Hinch announced Dan Haren will be the opening day starter. Brandon Webb, coming off surgery and a one-start season, will pitch game three.

I’m a little surprised at the early spring announcement, especially given the fact we don’t know what we will see from Webb yet. Hinch mentioned he gave the nod to Haren as a reward. Don’t get me wrong, I have no issues with Haren being the opening day starter, he’s that good, although he seemed to struggle quite a bit down the stretch last season. What I have issue with is automatically assuming Webb needs more time to get ready. First of all, we are talking two days, so how much extra preparation are you really giving Webb? Basically, in not so many words, Webb loses his usual opening day nod to injury. Chalk up one decision against Hinch in my book already and it’s only day one. Ughh, where’s Bobby Valentine?
