The Padres got on the board first in the top of the first inning off of a solo home run by Alexi Amarista, putting the Pads up 1-0. They would add another run in the top of the sixth inning when Cameron Maybin hit a solo home run to left center field. Amarista would double to deep right center field later in the inning to score Everth Cabrera and Will Venable, extending their lead to 4-0.

Paul Goldschmidt would finally put the D-backs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Willie Bloomquist, and cutting the lead to 4-1.

San Diego would add on to their lead in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run by Yasmani Grandal, putting the visitors up 5-1. Chris Young would hit a solo home run to cut the lead in the bottom of the seventh, but that wouldn’t be enough to stay with the Padres, as they would add another run in the top of the eight on a bases loaded walk.

The story of the night was Arizona’s inability to score with runners in scoring position. The snakes went 0-8 with runners in scoring position on the night, while stranding seven runners on base.

Last season outfielder Justin Upton was hit 19 times by opposing pitchers, tying him for first in the National League, but Arizona pitchers will not tolerate the same kind of treatment of Upton this year.
