Sometimes Winners are Losers

By Scott Allen

Earlier today I listed my winners and losers this spring so far for the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Included in the winners post was non-roster invitee Willie Mo Pena. Pena, who was hitting .341 with 3 HR's and 7RBI with 24 total bases this spring, was sent to the Dbacks minor league camp along with another non-roster invitee Micah Owings.

Owings really wasn't much of a surprise.  Owings gave up 6 ER in 7.1 innings pitched, giving him an ERA of 7.36.  Owings also never got a look at first base or given any at-bat's this spring as general manager Kevin Towers said may happen back in February.

Back to Pena though, I'm not sure what much else he could of done, which makes me wonder why did they bring him to camp in the first place?  I mean, if the guy is going to hit .341 and produce like he did, isn't that the type of guy you want on your team?  What has Geoff Blum or Xavier Nady done this spring?  Oh yeah, that would be zilch.  I realize the roster needs to be trimmed, but I thought dead weight got trimmed, not players who were producing?  Hopefully the move doesn't come back and bite them.
