Diamondbacks Roster Review: Joe Saunders

By Scott Allen

As we head into the second half of the season, it is time to take a look at the current roster before all the possible trades and roster moves are made as the Arizona Diamondbacks continue to contend for a possible NL West divisional title.  Next Up – Joe Saunders

Saunders is 5-7, 4.04 ERA, 107 IP

Review: Saunders has really heated things up after practically doing nothing in spring training and the first month and a half of the season.  Since giving up 5 runs on June 10th in Florida, Saunders has given up 3 runs or less in each of his last four starts.  Last night he gave up 2 runs, both of which scored thanks to inherited runners by the bullpen.  Saunders also has started to eat up innings, which is exactly what the Dbacks need from him.

Outlook: If Saunders can maintain his current pace, he will really solidify himself in the rotation as the #3 guy, if he hasn’t already done that.  His spring training and April were disasters, to the point I had been calling for his removal from the roster.  To the Dbacks credit they didn’t give up on him.  As long as Saunders pitches like he has the past month, he will be an Arizona Dback for a long while.  If there is any sign he is digressing back to spring training and early season form, it will be interesting to see how far the Dbacks patience goes with him.
