As we head into the second half of the season, it is time to take a look at the current roster before all the possible trades and roster moves are made as the Arizona Diamondbacks continue to contend for a possible NL West divisional title. Next Up – David Hernandez.
Hernandez 3-2, 3.55 ERA
Review: Hernandez was money man as the set-up guy in April and May. June was another story. However the first two months Hernandez pretty much getting batters out in the 8th inning a routine thing. He surprised a lot of people by filling that hole in the bullpen, having been a starter much of his career. In June though, he looked human. I truly believe some of that had to do with the situations he was brought in for. There were a few times he came into games into the middle of an inning due to others struggles. That didn’t seem to work out well for him. He had forgettable, but unforgettable if you know what I mean, meltdowns in Pittsburgh and Detroit.
Outlook: He is the closer right now with closer J.J. Putz on the shelf. Hernandez has 3 saves, and the last save he got against Oakland a couple of days ago seemed to go just fine for him. When he returns to the set-up guy when Putz returns, let’s hope he stays in that role. Coming into a game mid-inning seems to be his downfall. If Hernandez can do what he did the first couple of months, the back end of the bullpen should be just fine.
