First Blood: Dbacks Defeat Giants 5-2

By Scott Allen

The Arizona Diamondbacks did what they needed to do, start off a huge three-game series against the San Francisco Giants 5-2.  Dbacks starter Ian Kennedy was just plain great on Monday night.  he only made two mistakes, two solo home runs.  The Dbacks had one big inning off Giants starter Matt Cain and that was enough to take game one of the series.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt made his debut and went 1-4.  He had a scolding single in his first at-bat and just missed a home run in his second at-bat.  He is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

What was really fun to watch though was how much fun the Dbacks were having.  Teams that are winning should be having fun.  In the end it was a close call as the Giants got a couple of men on base in the ninth inning, but J.J. Putz got his 25th save of the season and the Dbacks now can await the next two games with the possibility of coming back to Arizona with the NL West lead.  For now though, they are one game back.  How sweet it is.
