With as many young guys the Arizona Diamondbacks have on their roster right now, they could use some veteran leadership to get them through whatever funk it is the team is in right now. Should a guy like Justin Upton be that leader that steps up? Well, he has been hot and cold. Mostly hot this season, he has had lapses. Last night he made half an effort to catch a ball that went up against the wall, but then he made an amazing catch against the San Francisco Giants last week. Is it the opponent?
Maybe that’s what it is – playing down to the level of the opponent. They played great on the road including San Francisco, and then come home to play not so great against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. They have to maintain a high level all 162 games, otherwise there is no 163rd game in October.
That is where veteran leadership comes in. However, it does get hard when manager Kirk Gibson keeps throwing half a lineup filled with Reno Aces and Mobile Bay Bears. Even Upton has been there. Upton, Chris Young, and Miguel Montero. They were all there when they won the National League West in 2007. This team has the potential to be so much better. Time is running out though.
