With now just under 40 games left in the regular season, we are in the home stretch, the final quarter of the 2011 season. It is time to review the current Arizona Diamondbacks roster to look at what they’ve accomplished, where they are now, and what they can provide, if anything, in the final six-plus weeks of the National League West pennant race. Next up: Joe Saunders
What he’s accomplished: 8-10, 3.91 ERA. Early season struggles, a pleasant surprise.
What he’s doing now: Don’t let the record fool you, he’s doing ok, although Wednesday night he ran out of gas and gave up five runs in six innings.
What he means to the Dbacks run to the pennant: He’s the third guy in the rotation. Most playoff teams need to rely on three strong starters to succeed. He is the third guy no bones about it, however if he pitches like he has the past couple of times out, it could be a short playoff for the Dbacks if they make it. Right now though he needs to get back to what got him here over the past couple of months to give the Dbacks a shot at winning the NL West.
