Third Quarter Dbacks Review: Lyle Overbay

By Scott Allen

With now just under 40 games left in the regular season, we are in the home stretch, the final quarter of the 2011 season. It is time to review the current Arizona Diamondbacks roster to look at what they’ve accomplished, where they are now, and what they can provide, if anything, in the final six-plus weeks of the National League West pennant race. Next up: Lyle Overbay

What he’s accomplished: Accomplished little with the Pittsburgh Pirates and thus was released in the middle of a pennant race, although Overbay was let go after Pittsburgh started their late July slump.

What he’s doing now: Taking his second turn at being a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  He was with the Dbacks from 2001-2003.  He has all three Dbacks RBI’s in their win over Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies in his starting debut for the Dbacks.

What he means to the Dbacks run to the pennant: Will take turns at first base with Paul Goldschmidt.  If he can start hitting like the Pirates wished he had, he will greatly help the Dbacks in their quest for the division title.  He doesn’t have to hit .330 or hit 20 homers, he just needs to produce.  He’s proven in the past he has that capability.
